This may sound like a joke but cats can get acne just like humans. It is not just a problem experienced by teenagers. It is a glandular issue that is affected when the glands become over active. Feline acne occurs when an excess of a substance called sebum is excreted from the sebaceous glands of the face and chin.

Yes, this will cause pimples and blackheads to form on your cats face and chin. It appears just as human acne does. If your cat has oily skin then they become prone to feline acne more so than cats with non oily skin. Their glands become overactive and the sebum causes the cat’s coat to become shiny and waterproof.

Have you ever noticed how your cat will rub their jaw and chin on you? This is a way of marking you as their territory by rubbing the sebum oil onto your skin and clothes. Every cat has sebum coming from the glands of their face and it has a scent that only other cats can smell. This scent is used in marking.

Your cat may seem to have feline acne but it is always best to have it checked by a veterinarian if it becomes severe. Feline acne has been mistaken for other conditions such as a yeast infection of the chin, demodetic mange, or a deep follicle infection. So use caution when assuming the condition or trying to treat it at home.

In the case that your cat has been diagnosed with acne you can easily treat the affected area by gently cleansing the area with a mild antibacterial soap and warm water. Liquid antibacterial soap is easier to use and will soak thoroughly to the skin. The best part is that this simple treatment will not only rib your cat of the excess sebum secretions but it will kill the bacteria and germs along the affected spot. If your cat has any scabs or sore spots from scratching then you should refrain from washing the area until it has healed. Open sores will burn when antibacterial soap is applied. Use caution.

One thing most owners may overlook is what kind of food can kill your cat. Some feel that if we can eat it so can they. WRONG! The simplest most natural foods can send them right to the grave without warning. It’s crucial that every owner knows what food they can or can not have. Know the list so you can keep close attention to your trash. Cats are curious by nature and can get into things that you may think is harmless.

One of the foods that cats can’t have is green tomatoes and raw potatoes. These vegetables are high in a poisonous alkaloid and can cause gastrointestinal symptoms. The stems and leaves are even more toxic! Garlic is just as toxic, along with onions and other “smelly” type veggies. These vegetables destroy red blood cells in cats and can cause severe anemia.

No matter how many cartoons you see with cats drinking milk, it may not be a good idea to feed it milk. Most cats are lactose-intolerant. Milk causes bloating, cramps and upset stomach. Thanks to some brilliant people there is a product called Catsip. It’s made from skim milk and has an enzyme added to it to help with the digestion. You can find it in most supermarkets like Albertsons, and pets-mart.

Grapes, raisins and chocolate are toxic to mostly dogs and some cats. I think that you shouldn’t risk it either way. It always depends on the amounts that were ingested. Theobromine is the substance in chocolate that is toxic to both cats and dogs. The caffeine can increase their blood pressure; induce nausea, seizures, muscle spasms and vomiting. If you find that your cat accidentally came across your Hershey’s chocolate bar make sure you contact a vet immediately. Although toxicity depends on dose it is better to be safe than sorry.

Some medical treatments include IV fluids, Emetics, activated charcoal, anti-seizure medications and cardiac medications. The IV fluids are to prevent vomiting ad diarrhea while the emetics is to induce the vomiting up to 6-8 hours post chocolate ingestion. Activated charcoal is for ingestion greater than 4 hours prior to treatment or for patients that show continued signs of toxicity. The anti seizure medications are for tremors and seizures while the cardiac medication is for an irregular heart rate.

The best medication and treatment is prevention. Make sure you keep your kitty safe and away from these toxic foods and feed it good cat food. Accidents happen but make sure you know what to do to make sure your cat make sit out safely.

No matter what kind of cat tree you want to build, you need to take into consideration the following three things – cost, size, and your construction experience. Don’t let any one of these things stop you from building your own cat tree, but do plan according for what you can manage.

Let’s start with experience. If this is your first time doing a project like this, you might want to look around and check out what others have done. This will give you ideas for your own project. However, if you have done this before, then you most likely have a good idea of what you want.

Beginners should start with a simple cat tree. This will – most likely – keep the costs down and the size of your project small. However, your cat will never know the difference, and will enjoy your hard work immensely – no matter what the size.

And, if you’re concerned about your budget, don’t worry – costs can be kept to a minimum, unless you’re building an extravagant cat tree or you just want to use really high quality materials. For instance, you can find scrap pieces of plywood from a construction site or carpet squares at a discount from a building store. Maybe a friend or relative just got done with a renovation project and there’s left-over scrap materials you can use on your project.

You can also go to your local lumber yard and ask them for scraps or partial pieces of plywood that only cost a couple of dollars, if anything. If you go to a carpet store, you’ll be able to find empty tubes or scraps of carpet for anywhere from a couple of dollars to free. By now, you should be getting the idea that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to build something nice for your cat.

As far as size goes, you can go as simple as a 14” x 14” platform mounted to 12” long center post sitting on a 2’ x 2’ base, all wrapped in carpet or fake fur. On the other hand, you might decide to go with a more expensive multi-story “cat condo” extravaganza – it’s all up to you and what your pocketbook can handle. Also, take into consideration on how much time you want to put into this project. After all, you can always start small and add to it as time progresses.

To build a simple cat tree, all you really need is a square piece of plywood, a wooden post of appropriate width, carpet, wood glue, and nails. Use the glue to attach the carpet to the base and the post, and use nails to attach the two pieces together. You can then use a spring or heavy rope to attach a fun cat toy to the top of the post so that your cat has something to play with.

Whatever method you use – and however much you spend – you can be sure that your cat will love her new home-built cat tree. As long as you build it with love and care – being sure that there are no dangerous corners, edges, or loose parts – your cat will enjoy its tree for years to come.

There are many cat adoption programs out there, and not all of them offer the same services. When you go to choose a new cat companion for your family, you’ll want to be sure that the match is a good fit for both you and the animal. This will depend on many factors that should be investigated thoroughly through the cat adoption program you choose.

The best cat adoption programs will offer you the option of taking a cat home for a “trial run.” This allows you to see how the cat will behave around your children and other pets, and in your home. If the cat doesn’t seem to be adjusting well after two or three days, you can then opt to return the cat and choose another. Not all adoption programs offer this service, so be sure to ask if it’s available before deciding on one.

Another service that not all cat adoption programs offer is the background on the cat you’re choosing. The best programs will involve cats that were brought in by their owners, and therefore know some information about the cat’s behaviors and needs. If the adoption program doesn’t have contact with former owners, they should take great pains to learn the personality of each animal to be sure they will be matched with the right home.

In turn, information about you and your household will be used to determine if you’re a good fit for the cat. This could involve detailed information, such as proof that you’re allowed to have pets in your home and verification that you’ve taken care of the pets you already have. You may also be asked certain things about your lifestyle and household situation. All of this information can be matched with known information about the animal to ensure you choose a companion, rather than just a cat.

For example, you may have another cat in your home already and want to adopt another. Some cats are territorial and don’t get along well with other cats. The adoption program should be aware of this trait, and help you to choose a cat that will get along with the rest of your pets. In addition, if you’re away from home frequently, the adoption program should be able to find you a cat that doesn’t demand a lot of personal attention.

The right cat adoption program will also offer you assistance in training and integrating your cat into your family. This may include a class that teaches you how to bond with and train your cat once you get her home. It may also involve a structured and organized play group to introduce your cats to children in the home.

Possibly the most important service offered by many cat adoption programs is the availability of vaccinations and spay or neuter services. The cat you choose should already be completely up to date on her shots, and, if the animal is old enough, she should also be fixed before the adoption.

This is an important service that any reputable cat adoption program will offer. Vaccinations and spaying can be quite expensive, and should be provided for the cost of the pet adoption. Additionally, vaccinations can help prevent future illnesses for you and your cat, and spaying your cat can lengthen their lives considerably. Avoiding the cost of these vet visits is a major plus for many people who choose to work with cat adoption programs.

There are many reasons you need to keep your cat off the counter. First, most human food doesn’t have the nutrients necessary for a cat. If you allow the cat to eat scraps from the counter, she can get full and not want to eat the food that’s healthy for her. Additionally, if your cat gets hold of some raw chicken or beef, she can become deathly ill from bacteria. Knives and hot cooking surfaces pose equally dangerous problems for your furry feline.

For all of these reasons – as well as the necessity of keeping cooking areas clean – you’ll need to train your cat to keep off the counter. However, this may be easier said than done. In truth, it can actually take more time and effort to train your cat to stay off the counter than it did to train her to the litter box.

But don’t be discouraged! There are plenty of methods you can use to train your cat to stay off the counter, table, and other kitchen and dining surfaces. Deterrents of some type are typically used – the cat doesn’t like the result of getting on the counter, so she stops the behavior.

Some people turn to drastic measures to keep their cats off the counter. Whether it’s because they don’t want to take the time to train their cat or they’re away from home much of the day, these pet owners typically choose electric shock boundaries, which utilize a special collar and boundary tape to emit an electric shock to the cat whenever she goes where she doesn’t belong. While effective, this is very inhumane, and should be avoided.

The most common deterrent method is the spray bottle. This works for many things that you must train your cat not to do. Spray bottles are very effective, as long as they’re used properly. Many people make the mistake of spraying the cat openly, however, this allows the cat to associate the displeasure with the object rather than with the behavior you’re trying to correct.

A better method is to hold the bottle so that the cat can’t see it. This way, when she looks for the source of her displeasure, she only sees her loyal, faithful owner. Most cats want to please their owners, so they’ll stop the behavior that earned the spraying.

Another method for keeping your cat off the counter is to clean your counter with bleach. Just as bleach deters animals from getting into trash bags, cats will stay away from the bleach-smelling counters. This is very effective, but it doesn’t really train your cat – it just acts as a deterrent. However, be sure you thoroughly rinse the counters after wiping them down with bleach. You don’t want your cat to accidentally like some up if she does make her way onto the counter.

In the end, the only real way to be successful in keeping your cat off the counter is to be sure that no food is left out to tempt her. Always make sure that the cat has plenty of food and water, as well – otherwise, she’ll go scrounging for what she needs. Cats are natural born hunters, and if you don’t care for their needs, they’ll do whatever is necessary – even if it’s getting onto counters and drinking out of the sink.

Unfortunately, there are many situations in which a kitten may become abandoned. You may have found the kittens in the city, victims of a stray cat being hit by a car shortly after giving birth. Or, perhaps your own cat had kittens and didn’t survive long enough to care for them for some reason.

Whatever the situation, you’ll need to learn how to care for the abandoned kitten – and quickly. How difficult this will be will depend on the age of the kitten. If the kitten is under two weeks old, you’ll have to bottle feed her and clean her – and essentially become her mother. You can determine if the kitten is two weeks or younger by whether or not she has any teeth.

For these younger kittens, you’ll need to purchase a pet bottle and kitten formula from your local pet store. Don’t give the kitten cow’s milk, as this is far too rich. It may take a day or two to get the kitten to drink from the bottle. To start, hold her close to your chest so that she feels like she’s nuzzling up to her mother.

After the kitten has been fed, you’ll need to clean her. Use a warm, soft washcloth and wash the kitten in short strokes from nose to tail. This will not only keep the kitten clean, but also teach her how to wash herself as she gets older. You’ll also need to wash the kitten’s lower regions to help stimulate her to get rid of waste, as she won’t instinctively do this until she’s two to three weeks old.

If the kitten has teeth, you can begin feeding her soft, canned kitten food. You may need to grind it up a bit and water it down to make it easier for the kitten to chew as she gets used to eating. Again, it may take a day or two to get the kitten to eat this new food. If, after two days, the kitten still hasn’t eaten, you may need to go back to bottle feeding for a few days and then try again. At this point, you’ll also need to give the kitten a separate source of water.

Shortly after taking in the kitten, you’ll want to visit a vet to get a cat vaccination. This is a vital step in ensuring the health and well-being of your new friend.

Kittens older than three weeks can be litter trained. This is also fairly simple to do if you stick with it. This is especially true if you’ve been washing the kitten as soon as she’s finished eating. Each time the kitten finishes eating, place her in the litter box and dig her paws into the litter. This will help the kitten know what to do. Usually, litter training only takes a few days if you’re consistent and start as soon as the kitten is old enough to do so.

Really, caring for an abandoned kitten isn’t that difficult – as long as you know what to do. In addition, the process of taking care of a tiny, helpless being can be very rewarding. However, keep in mind that when you care for an abandoned kitten, it may be very difficult to give her up. Before you begin taking care of the kitten, make sure you want to keep her for good – or find someone else who will.
